A short business plan can expose assumptions before they become expensive commitments. Use one page to describe the customer, the problem, the proposed offer and the next evidence you need.

Describe one customer problem

Name the type of customer and the situation in which the problem occurs. Replace a broad claim such as everyone needs this with a concrete account of what a person is trying to accomplish.

Explain the current alternative, including doing nothing. This creates a useful comparison for your proposal and reveals whether the idea depends on a behaviour change you have not yet investigated.

Separate assumptions from evidence

Write the offer in plain language, then list the assumptions behind it. These may concern willingness to pay, the effort required to deliver the service or the way customers discover it.

For each assumption, identify a small way to learn more. A conversation, a prototype demonstration or a documented process trial can answer different questions. Record what happened rather than rewriting the result to fit the pitch.

Choose the next decision

List the main delivery steps and costs you would need to investigate. Avoid filling a plan with invented market statistics or revenue forecasts presented as established facts. If you use a hypothetical number, label it.

End the page with a decision and a date for reviewing evidence. The plan should help you decide what to test, change or stop. It is a working document, not a promise that the business will succeed.

Practical checklist

  • Name a specific customer and problem
  • Describe the current alternative
  • List untested assumptions
  • Choose one next learning step

What to take away

A useful early plan makes uncertainty easier to see. Its value comes from the decisions it improves as evidence arrives.
