How to check a claim: question, evidence and context

Checking a claim works best when you define exactly what is being asserted. A clear question helps you find the right kind of evidence and avoid confusing a repeated statement with independent confirmation.

Checking a claim works best when you define exactly what is being asserted. A clear question helps you find the right kind of evidence and avoid confusing a repeated statement with independent confirmation.

Turn the statement into a testable question

Write the claim in a short sentence that includes its scope and time frame. A broad statement about everyone or always may conceal several different assertions. Break it into smaller questions where necessary.

Identify what would count as relevant evidence. A document can establish what an institution announced; it may not establish whether the announced outcome has happened. Match the evidence to the question.

Examine origin and context

Find who produced the source, when it was created and why it exists. Read definitions, qualifications and methodological notes. A number without its denominator or a quotation without its surrounding sentence can mislead.

Look for genuinely independent evidence where appropriate. Multiple copies of a single statement remain one evidence trail. Record any contradictions rather than quietly discarding an inconvenient source.

Write a proportionate conclusion

State what the available evidence supports, what it does not resolve and when the check was made. Avoid a more confident label than the evidence justifies.

Keep source links and notes so another reader can inspect your method. A clear account of uncertainty is more useful than a confident answer built on missing information.

Practical checklist

  • Define the claim precisely
  • Match evidence to the question
  • Check origin, scope and date
  • Explain remaining uncertainty

What to take away

A fact check is a traceable reasoning process. The conclusion should be no broader than the evidence behind it.
